We will revisit the goals or objectives for the unit (Big Idea). The students will be introduced to the following vocabulary words: (butterfly) metamorphosis, egg, larva, pupa, chrysalis, cocoon (moth), and, adult. 3. Modeling: I Do (10 min) 1. Explain to students that the butterflies also fall under the scientific insect order name as moths. Ask students to recall the name Lepidoptera. 2. Discuss the life cycle of the moth so that the students use prior knowledge to make inferences about how butterflies and moths are alike and different. Interaction/discussion with class 1. I will then ask to describe butterflies they have seen. Most students are familiar with butterflies and will already have a mental image of them. 2. Use the Promethean Board to show the students pictures of the stages of the butterfly’s life cycle. The picture will be in order of its stages. They will also see the circular flow chart format of the life cycle. Also at this time student will be introduced to a labeled photo of a butterfly and a moth. We will discuss the differences and similarities. 3. I will call on select students up to the Promethean board to fill in a version of the butterfly diagram. We will also use the board to classify the characteristics of each insect. (Guided Practice)

4. Guided Practice: We Do (15 min) Using what has been taught during this lesson the students will turn and talk with their partners to discuss the three stages that butterflies and moths share and the one different stage. The students will also note what the difference in that stage.
