of innovation. Once the ideas become crystallized, the Munktell Science Park at the university provides an incubation hub for the budding entrepreneurs. The Dean of the Rotman School of Management in Canada, Dr Roger Martin, envisions business schools as places for Integrative Thinking . The Rotman School has set up a consultancy under the name of Designworks to provide design services to companies seeking business transformations. Similar approaches are under way at MIT and the University of California, Berkley in the US, the Stuttgart Media University in Germany and the Milan Institute in Italy. These act as comparators for the developments in India. Ne w Platform to Discuss De sign Thinking in Management Education in India WeSchool1 in Mumbai, India has chosen to create a new environment where design thinking and business management are woven together to create a new integrated disciplinary approach to innovation and design thinking . It provided a new platform to discuss Design thinking in Management by organizing a number of events to that effect, as shown in the sections below. Through these initiatives, it became possible to spread a buzz around the industry about the merits of bringing design thinking into management, to benefit the companies operating in all industry sectors and also the design houses and consultancy firms as they would now find more buy-in for the value that design could create in the business. WeSchool organizes events that promote design thinking in management as we are aware that any new thought has to be properly propagated to all stakeholders for its true value to be recognized. Some of the events have been as follows. Approaches to Design and Management in India 117 13 October 2006: Design: The Next Frontier A round table on the impact and use of design in various industry sectors like retail, banks, fast-moving consumer goods and capital markets. Interestingly all the eminent speakers spoke about how deeply design affects their businesses. For some, design was a road to Innovation but, for others, it was the services that were designed to achieve maximum customer satisfaction. The richness of the discussion that followed helped us to understand further how design is to be redefined every time to gel with the context and how businesses can leverage on design thinking in management within their organizations. 9 11 August 2007: Grow by Design A workshop by IDEO, USA. As WeSchool was looking to bring design thinking into the Indian business community, it brought IDEO, the leading innovation and design consultancy firm in the US, to conduct a focused, two-and-a-half day innovation
