The feeling of physical improvement was closelyrelated to learners’ reports of theirincreasing independence. Some of the learners hardly ever wheeled themselves andmost often depended on others to move around the school environment and doactivities of daily living. The learners indicated that their mobility independence hadincreased occasioned by their participation in the programme. From participating inthe programme, they were able to wheel themselves in places they were previouslyunable to and undertake activities of daily living for which they previously neededassistance such as bathing. The excerpts below indicate some of the reflections onthe subject of independence.
94When I am with my wheelchair, I can fetch my own water for a bath. Previously, Iused to depend totally on my friends to fetch the water for me.(Male, Form 3).I acquired my disability through an accident. What people are saying of me is true-my independence has greatly improved. I can take myself to most places, from classto the dormitory, without help, though slowly.(Female, Form 1).For some learners, dependence syndrome had grown to the extent that they hadnever thought they could ever wheel themselves. One girl, had always looked forassistance to move around. After the programme, she reflected thus,I hardly wheeled myself before this programme started. I did not believe I could. The class we had on physical activity was really helpful in helping with knowledgeand skills. …And then with these friends I started trying bit by bit. Now I can takemyself to various places, though slowly.(Female, Form 1).These improvements in independence stood out especially for those who previouslyneeded some assistance. The leaders of one of theChezaclub noted how they wereencouraged by others’ improvements. One of them, also assigned other leadershipduties underlined how participating in the program improved his confidence andservice delivery. The other had hardly wheeled herself ever since she acquireddisability, a few months back. The excerpts below highlight these reflections.Being the leader here has enhanced my leadership in the school. Currently, I headthe journalism and entertainment docket. I am charged with reporting to the wholeschools all events in the school apart from organising for entertainment. That I canwheel myself to many places in the school for various duties is very good for me. I
95do not have to be with someone everywhere I go to attend to the needs of otherstudents.(Chezaclub leader, Male, Form 3).I can independently wheel myself around. I could not do this....I look forward togoing home and surprise my grandmother that I am independent. …as the assistantclub leader, I have joyed seeing people here who could not wheel do so especially inthe dorms without being assisted. For instance, Esther and Mercy always neededhelp around. Now they do not.(Cheza club assistant leader, Female, Form 2).
