Origins Its consuming the culture of the mid-late 20 th century Before WW2 there were several super powers; Japan, Great Britain and the war changes everything! After WW2 the old super powers are not any more! Now you have 2 new ones; USA and Soviet Union WW2 was concluded with 2 new super powers and the US taking a different stance on foreign policy US comes out as the most powerful nation and this intensifies some foreign policies a. democracies become an issue that the US actually acts on; they want to enhance democracy b. global economic opportunities c. strategic interest of the US; everything is looked at and analyzed now and the US wants to know everything; US really keeps its eyes on the rest of the world now d. fourth goal that the US has that intertwines with strategic interest; World Stability that might be the most important; the US wants to make sure that everything is okay enough not to have anymore craziness like another world war

Postwar goals b. Relations with Soviets decline US and Great Britain got along great before and after the war but GB is not a super power anymore and the 2 new super powers, US and Soviet Union, become suspicious of each other and eventually leads to the Cold War There is no treaty that ends WW2, its just ends US has decided that it is really going to care if democracies are enhancing or the spread of anarchy which is what the USSR is doing; USSR is not a good economic opportunity for the US and the situation doesn’t look good George Kennan is a young foreign policy analyst and he looks at this situation and says that the USSR is behaving the way they are for a few reasons: good communists are supposed to spread their and they were just paranoid b/c there are no really no more communist countries; yes they are expanding to protect themselves; he said that if you go back to even hundreds of years, the soviets were about expansion all to protect themselves so they would just adding territory c. Containment Containment Policy: US was the one super power that the USSR knew could detain their expansions and communist ways In the later half of the 1940’s the US looked at current events and viewed them based on their recent past; the USSR’s recent past was the 1930’s with WW2 and Hitler who took power in 1933 The US recognizes that Stalin was just like Hitler b/c they both were like “im just going to
