have kidney disease. If you're at a healthy weight, work to maintain it by being physically active most days of the week this often involves increasing daily physical activity and reducing calories. Cigarette smoking can damage your kidneys and make existing kidney damage worse. If you’re a smoker your nurse will likely talk to you about smoking cessation. Support groups, counseling and medications can all help you to stop. If you go through dialysis or a kidney transplant a specialist will help you set up future appointments and possible treatments at home, so you are more comfortable. Prognosis It usually gets worse over time though treatment has been shown to slow progression. If left untreated, CKD can progress to kidney failure and early cardiovascular disease. For some who choose not to have dialysis or a kidney transplant, a third option is to treat kidney failure with conservative measures.
