born a long time ago during the Renaixenca that defended the retrieval of the Catalan language in education, literature, and culture. ( El Nacionalismo Catalán a lo Largo de la Historia, Europa Digital, 2018) However, to understand its origins and motives we must start with the first declaration of the Catalan collective identity that goes back to the 17th century during the historical revolts of Catalonia and Portugal in 1640 denouncing the pretensions of political centralization. Catalans organized the “Corpus de Sangre” in Barcelona to declare their inacceptance of the centralizing reforms of the Condeduque de Olivares where they declared for the first time of the Spanish history independence, proclaiming the Catalan Republic and naming Louis XIII as the “ Conde de Barcelona”. Another important moment of the history that lead to the consolidation of a Catalan identity was the “ Nova Planta Decrees” after the War of the Spanish Succession. When winning the War of the Spanish Succession(1700-1715), Felipe V promulged centralizing norms in retaliation for the support given to the Archduke of Austria, his rival, in Aragon’s Crown. Thus, Valencia, Aragon, Mallorca, and Catalonia had their political institutions and own laws abolished. Consequently, with Felipe V withdrawing his support to the Catalan nobles and giving more power to the peasants( that became landowners) product surpluses were generated, production became oriented to the market and not to be consumed and more income was registered. The political protectionism also promoted internal trade( imports were forbidden) as well as exports to American colonies which was very beneficial to Catalonia having Barcelona port as a strategic point. In this manner, Catalonia represented within the Spanish economy of the 18th century a particular case because it experienced an economic upturn that turned it into a more advanced zone aiming at the industrial revolution. On the other hand, it also represented a disequilibrium in the Spanish economy. As a result of all these events, the conviction of maintaining a linguistic, political, and cultural community, differentiated from the rest of Spain with its own traditions and historical roots, grew even more. ( El Nacionalismo Catalán a lo Largo de la Historia , Europa Digital, 2018) Catalan collective identity continued growing until it acquired political content, which was spread by taking advantage of the economic growth during the Restauration.
