Healthcare professionals are tasked with diagnosing diabetes by testing the blood sugar levels of suspect patients. Type 1 diabetes is diagnosed in patients that show symptoms of the disease and is typically detected in children while routine checks are necessary to diagnose type 2. Usually, the fasting plasma glucose or A1C test is used in the diagnosis (Nathan, 2015). Depending on the type of diabetes, treatment is done through monitoring the blood sugar or insulin and oral medications. In most cases especially for the type 1 patients, insulin injections are necessary to regulate blood sugar. Patients should also practice healthy eating habits and exercise frequently. It is indicated that the lifespan a patient may increase by close to 15 years after treatment. The National Diabetes Statistics report can be used to obtain the morbidity and motility statistics of diabetes. This report gives the overall overview of this disease including the risk factors, information on prevalence, deaths, treatments and the efforts aimed at preventing the disease in the US. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
