Henry compare to modern heroes today who stand to defend their place  and never give up their pride. The fact that John Henry died defending his place and successfully  overcoming oppression against him makes him and other heroes seem larger than life in their  stories. 5. On page 440 Levine states "new heroes took their place alongside the trickster: slave ancestors  who had dared defy the system in defense of their dignity, their rights, their family and  friends;exaggerated heroes who symbolized a growing belief in the ability of the individual to cope with the exigencies that faced him; bad men and bandits who could act out act out the fury and  anger felt by so many; moral hard men who broke the molds that Negroes were supposed to  conform to and created new roles and new possibilities" (440). Slave tricksters, Bad Men, Moral  Hard Men, and other slave heroes represented strength and pride in overcoming white opposition after Emancipation. This new found pride signaled a significant cultural shift. What prompted the  change was the effectiveness of the slave hero ultimately symbolizes the overcoming of slavery  and white oppression.   6. Cultural containment refers to a group whose cultural standards and world view are determined  by the values of the group itself and are held with a lack of self consciousness. Cultural  marginality
