compensation is a way to keep costs down. Agricultural industry is not the only organizations that pay wage only. Many small businesses such as the local mechanic shop my friend works for is wage only. He makes a substantial amount of money from his wages though so it makes up for not having the traditional benefits like insurance, or bonuses offered by other companies. It is a small company with a small employee base so the insurance packages are not much better than what the employees can get on their own. The employees at the shop would much rather get higher wages than have insurance anyways. Some non-profits such as To Write Love On Her Arms also do not offer benefits, bonuses, or merit pay. Many of the employees are volunteers, but they do have official full time employees on staff with the organization. To Write Love On Her Arms’ main goal is to maximize the funds they can offer for their cause, so wage only compensation allows them to do that.
