According to Robert et al (pg. 474) , laws regarding animal testing are set out in the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act (ASPA) of 1986. The law permits animal testing be done if there is no other viable alternatives to the methods and the potential benefits outweigh the harms. Scientists are committed to using non animal alternatives wherever possible to reduce the number of animals and refined procedures to reduce suffering. This commonly referred to as the

Surname 3 3 R’s principles meaning replacement, reduction and refinement during the research as stated by Perry (pg. 43).By observing the 3R’s shows that scientists still care about the health of animals and that they should not be harmed unnecessarily. Animals that are commonly used include, rodents such as rats and mice, fish, amphibians and reptiles, large and small mammals, dogs, cats and primates. The law bans the use of great apes new drugs are tested using at least 2 different species of a live mammal that is non- rodent. According to Fentem (pg. 3), in march 2013, a new European Union EU) law was implemented after being passed in 2009.Unlike in China, the law clearly made it illegal to sell animal tested cosmetics in Europe even if the testing is done outside Europe. Some animals rights group say that there is need and in a special way to work twice as hard in helping people understand that animals are fellow creatures worth protection and love just as the humans love themselves. Pro and Con Arguments Regarding Animal Testing In Relation To Culture and Religion Is it morally and ethically right to carry out animal testing? The question has triggered intense deb ate in the U.K, the rest of Europe and the United states. Millions of animals die globally in various experiments ranging from drugs, floor cleaners and cosmetics. Scientists strongly defend animal research citing that it has contributed to many lifesaving cures and treatments. For instance, in an experiment that was carried out on dogs by removing their pancreases led to the discovery of insulin which is a cure to diabetes as stated by Rosenfeld (pg. 2272 ) .Testing of polio vaccines on animals has also helped reduce the occurrence of the disease globally. Also major advances regarding understanding and treatment of various diseases such as cancer, malaria, Leukemia tuberculosis etc.

Surname 4 There are suggested alternatives in animal research that are inadequate in the body systems since human body is very complex. It is difficult to study cell structures, the nervous system etc. in a petri dish in order know the suitability of a drug or its effects. Animals are said to be similar to human beings in many ways making them suitable for research. A good example though it is not used in the U.K except for mice, apes share 99% of its DNA with humans while the mice take up 98% as stated by Wildman et al (pg. 7184).The similarity makes them susceptible to similar diseases and illnesses such as heart disease .Scientists also claim that ethical considerations should be made and humans should not be subjected to danger.
