o A simple test based on hierarchy. Speech Reception Threshold: o The primary test we conduct. o An identification measures o Test signal – Spondees – W-1 Word List – 36 Words (ex: hotdog, baseball, airplane, railroad) o Hughson Westlake procedure – lowest level, 3/6 words Present a single word about 30 dB above their pure tone average (PTA) Go down 10 and then present another word like you do with pure tones Repeat until an incorrect response Stay at that level and present 6 words If 3 words are correct, go down 5 dB & repeat If 4 words are incorrect, go up 5 dB and repeat The difference is your identifying 50% correct words at the lowest level out of 6 – 3/6 words (SRT) o Purposes: Threshold Measure for Speech In addition to pure tones using a complex signal Verify Pure Tone Results Take the PTA, which is the average of 500, 1000, 2000, and you measure that against the speech threshold 2

If my PTA is 35, the my SRT (Speech reception threshold) should be around 35 as well. o Usually +/- of 5 - 8dB If you have a flat hearing loss at 40 dB, if the thresholds at 500, 1000, and 2000 average is at 40 dB your SRT should be 40. Reference for Supra-threshold Testing Word Recognition Testing o If a person’s speech reception threshold is 35 dB, then we’ll use it as a reference to go higher than that say 40 dB above and do the next test at 75 dB. Speech Audiometry Word Recognition Testing – Lecture Cast 8.2 Word Recognition Testing is also referred to as speech discrimination. It is NOW different than any other test than we have discussed Air conduction pure tone testing, bone conduction pure tone testing, speech awareness threshold, speech recognition threshold are all threshold measures.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
