EXTINCTIONS HOMEWORK 3 by introducing nonnative species. These plants or animals—such as the zebra mussel—can grow out of control and become invasive. They can crowd certain areas and attack other species. 2 Hunting and poaching have led to a scarcity of species, too, because of its reduction in genetic variability. This occurs when the gene pool becomes too small and inbreeding can make the remaining animals unhealthy. 2 Many modern governments placed limits on hunting after the realized the problem, but poachers often take as many animals as they want regardless of the law. Illegal hunting has especially threatened African species such as the Rhino, Lion, and Elephant. However, the most common cause of extinction overall is habitat loss through the first two factors. 3 Not all extinctions are bad.
