looking at the sky and Johnny eventually came outside. He said the mist was beautiful like it was all gold and silver. Ponyboy then remembered a poem by Robert Frost and he recited it. Johnny was shocked. Ponyboy says that the only reason he remembered the poem is because the meaning of the poem eluded him. Ponyboy had gotten sick from smoking on an empty stomach on the 5 th day. Therefore, he curled up in the corner. Dally came by and Ponyboy said hi. They ask him about their situation back in Oklahoma. He informs them that the police think that they’re in Texas. After that, he gives Pony a letter from Sodapop. Sodapop knew that Dally knew their whereabouts. So, he gave a letter to him. Dally also tells him about how Darry feels but Ponyboy was busy reading the letter. Ponyboy definitely thinks that Sodapop could improve his spelling. Dally asks them if they want something to eat. They felt good to get in a car after a long time. They stopped at Dairy Queen to get some food to eat. Dally informs them about the war going on between Socs and Greasers. He tells them that it’s very dangerous to walk alone. He also says that Cherry is working as a spy for Greasers. Chapter 6 Johnny and Ponyboy were so shocked by this that Johnny gagged and Pony almost dropped his hot fudge sundae. He said that Cherry came the night that Two-Bit was jumped. Dally told them that she would testify the Socs drank alcohol and Johnny fought back in self- defense. Ponyboy asked how Dally knew about Jay Mountain. He responded by saying that he had a cousin who lived around there.
Johnny says after finishing his 5 th sandwich that he was going to turn himself in. Dally asks Johnny one more time if he wants to do this because Greasers get worse punishment than other people and especially the Socs. He asks Dally doggedly if his parents are worried about him. Dally said no and Johnny stared at the dashboard with hurt bewilderment . Dally asks him why he didn’t turn himself in 5 days ago. He replies with conviction and says that he was scared. Johnny tells Ponyboy that they ruined their hair for nothing. He agrees with him. Dally tries to make Johnny reconsider his decision because his experience in jail wasn’t something to enjoy. Suddenly, the church caught on fire! Ponyboy and Johnny went to go check it out while Dally was cussing at them for going. A lady came in and told one of the adults there that some of the children were missing. There was a scream coming from inside the church. Ponyboy told everyone he’d go inside because he knew he started it. He threw a rock inside to get in. Johnny was behind him too. They went to the back room and one kid was freaking until Johnny told him to shut up. Pony took the nearest kid and took a look at his face, which was red marked from falling embers and sweat streaked. After they saved everyone, Johnny shoved Pony toward the window and said get out.
