His attacked seemed to be random so there was a media frenzy He had at least 9 victims oHe was captured and brought to trial in 1930 (by someone he raped): People gasped because he looked so normal in court He was soft spoken until he talked about his crimes Science of criminal profiling starts after this Prison psychiatrist was obsessed with him He thought he was an object of vengeance by god Found guilty in1930 oSentenced to death by guillotine in1931 Asked if he would be able to hear his blood gush and was excited about that oHis pattern: he was sexually stimulated by blood so he stabbed/attacked people until he saw enough blood (didn’t care if they survived after) Richard Chase (1950-1980) oBorn in California and grew up in a strict house (claimed his father abused him but never proven) oWhen he was young he had theMcDonald Triad(discredited today) used to see if people will become serial killers: Torturing animals or dissecting animal corpses Pyromania (after age 5) Bedwetting oAs a teen he had many girlfriends but they said he couldn’t performsexually Psychologists told him he was suppressing rage He got into drugs & alcohol oHe moved in with new roommates but they were scared of him because he was weird oHe had drug-induced schizophrenia (they are usually more violent than regular schizophrenics) oSchizophrenics usually latch onto a symbol and believe a false story about them He thought he had “soap dish poisoning” that was making his heart shrink and turn his blood into powder (this came from strange hallucinations like him thinking he was missing part of his heart or that his stomach was backwards) He starts to think he needs to ingest blood oStarts with animals–blends up live animals and eats organs raw oThis doesn’t work so in1975he injects rabbits blood into his veins and almost kills himself so he is institutionalized He is called “Dracula” at institution because he catches birds from windows and bites their necks He drained blood from therapy dog oHe was released from institution after 1 year into care of mother with meds Mother didn’t give him meds because she didn’t think he needed them

Mental health law says person must present clear danger to someone else or themselves to be held Law about guns: guns only taken away if person is signed in involuntarily but most places give you the option to sign yourself in (you stay less time) oHe starts to get worse and steps it up to cows (he was once pulled over with a bucket of cow’s blood in his car) oHis first killing: drive by shooting of a 51 year old mechanic (he was testing himself to see if he was ready to kill and he was) oIn January 1978: he surprised a 3 month pregnant woman in her home and killed her, raped her corpse, stabbed her, cut her nipples to collect blood in yogurt containers (left rings of blood) oOn January 27, 1978: he came into a house with a 38 year old woman with her neighbor, a 22 moth old nephew, and 6 year old child 
