Slavery has happened as early as the biblical times where nations would invade others and take prisoners to become their slaves. So, who is at risk now of being trafficked? Refugees and people who are from lower socio-economic backgrounds are more at risk to fall into being trafficked. In Karl Marx’s theory of Social Conflict which says that because of the way we produce goods for profits. In other words, the lower the cost of production the more profit someone can make. This has caused the problem of people trying to make as much money as possible even at the cost of hurting others. In order to make change we need to make people aware of the effects of not being socially conscience of how our purchasing power can make a difference. For example, if we all 2
started to shop fair trade where people are paid a living wage for their work, I believe we would see a huge change just from that. The other thing that goes with this is that we need to have more rehabilitation programs from people who are rescued from sex trafficking. If we do not have counseling and job training for these vulnerable people they will have no choice but to enter back into the trade they have just been rescued from. The other key to prevention is protecting the vulnerable groups of people that are being preyed upon in the first place. I believe creating a living wage is a way we can help stop all trafficking. I believe there will always be opposition because there is a huge profit to be made from this trade and people will do whatever it takes to make money even at the expense of others.
