This concerns specifically the education of designers and the funding of design leadership promotion. The more general field of politics is full of obstacles for design leadership. Education of Designers. Most design education has its historical roots in art schools, polytechnics and universities. A few exceptions emerged in the early 1980s. These include the Delft University in the Netherlands, which introduced an educational model built on four pillars, geared towards setting and maintaining high standards in their research programmes. The Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago (IIT) is another example. The IIT focused on a human-centred innovation model and strong links with the industry. Unfortunately many design schools still do not believe that designers should be educated in a context that combines aesthetics and human factors with the commercial imperative. Larry Keeley, is the managing director of the Chicago-based innovation management

consultancy, the Doblin Group and also teaches at the IIT. He observed that, although designers have taken notice of design leadership matters, designers still do not understand the sheer scale of modern business transformation. Design and designers, according to Keeley, did not transform at the same pace as the design specialization Design Leadership: Limits and Future Opportunities 405 and focused factories in countries like India and China have changed (Keeley 2005). Shaping and leading design specializations through training is a big opportunity for the educational world, he concludes. Funding of Design Leadership and Politics. From the moment when it was noticed that countries can create competitive advantage through leadership in education, R&D and politics (Porter 1990) researchers have observed an important role for creativity in the context of economic developments as well (Florida 2002). We have already witnessed a transformation from production towards service and creativity in the Western world in recent decades. We are now watching rapid advances in terms of learning and transformations in Asian countries like China, India and Korea. Funding of creativity, innovation and R&D-related research is now a priority on the agenda of their policy makers and promoted at a much higher pace than we have ever seen in Europe. Sustainability The final source that limits design leadership concerns matters of sustainability. Keywords in this context include the triangulation of economy, society and the environment; ecological design and the number problems. Triple Bottom Line (Economy, Society, Ecology) Dilemma? Design as contribution to more products in shorter lead times, for global markets and lower costs? Or design with strong ethics, a responsible citizen and responsibility. One can argue that not much has changed since Papanek (1971) published his book Design for a Real World.
