Page 3 of 4 Metcash is an ASX listed company, which distributes and markets groceries, fresh produce, alcoholic beverages, hardware and other consumer goods. Within its network the group supplies and supports approximately 5,000 independent retailers and approximately 100,000 other businesses across the food and grocery, liquor and hardware industries. The Group employs over 6,000 people and indirectly supports further employment via its network of Successful Independents. Notable retailers the company own include: IGA, Mitre 10, Home Timber & Hardware (HTH) and Cellarbrations. Metcash operates a low cost distribution model that enables its independent retail customers to compete against the vertically integrated retail chains and other competitors. The Group’s core competencies include: procurement, logistics, marketing, retail development and retail operational support. Metcash operates major distribution centres in all the mainland states of Australia. These are complemented by a number of smaller warehouses and the Campbells branch network. In the financial year 2018, Metcash reported a statutory loss of $149.5 million after tax (FY17: statutory profit of $171.9 million after tax). The reported loss is due to the impairment of goodwill and other net assets of $345.5 million (post tax) in the Food & Grocery pillar, which was announced on 6 June 2018.
