Cultural Systems There are 6 cultural systems that are discussed in Leading with Cultural Intelligence by David Livermore and they are economic, marriage and family, educational, legal and political, religious, and artistic. Out of these 6, I am going to focus on 4 of them that would be the most relevant to my conversation with Stella and they are economic, legal and political, religious, and artistic. Economic- “Every society has to come up with basic ways of meeting its members’ universal needs of food, water, clothing, and housing. Understanding how a culture has organized itself to produce, allocate, and distribute these basic resources is extremely important to culturally intelligent leadership.” When we first moved to the community of 1 Hudson in Northwestern, Ontario, it was hard for us to know how to properly help people. At times it looked overwhelming. But the longer we were there, we realized that there were [Livermore, David (2019). Leading with Cultural Intelligence, Second Edition (p. 84). 1 Wordsearch. resources available to us to be able to help Stella. Instead of just letting her stay at our house, we sent her to the women’s shelter where they offered her a warm place to stay, food, and clothing. Legal and Political- “ Most cultures develop systems for maintaining order to ensure citizens will not violate the rights of others in the society. This results in the legal system of a society, which is closely tied with the government of a particular place.” Canada would tend 2 to lean towards a more socialistic form of government. Free healthcare, stricter gun laws, etc., and so for Stella, this was all offered to her as well. Because she is also Native American, there is also different things offered to her than what is offered to the regular white person. It was easy for me to judge her think, well, why can she not get her life together when she is offered all of this stuff? But the more I spent time in that culture, the more I realized how cycles are hard to break. Religious- “ Every culture develops a way of explaining what otherwise seems inexplicable. There are no uniform conventions for answering these questions, but all societies offer a variety of supernatural and religious beliefs for things that go beyond human understanding.” For Stella, I think that this would be the hardest to get past. There always 3 seemed a touch of bitterness in her towards religion. I do not know her history but perhaps she was hurt by a religious system or affiliation. So how would I lead her towards Jesus even while she may ask questions like, “Why do bad things happen to good people?” In our world today, I think that religion has turned so many people away because of the judgmental attitudes that seem [Livermore, David (2019). The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
