Fuseli’s painting went against the contemporary practice of seeking to instill political virtue in its spectators in its 18 th century context. At the theater in Dury Lane it pursued a positive project, the 18 th century performance of individuals’ introduced by David Garrick. It related the 18 th century revival of ancient Athenians tragedy, which inducted an aesthetic practice comparing apparently incompatible moral and cultural totalities, specifically to the discovery of cultural differences near the end of the 18 th century. Fuseli’s wash drawings and oil painting of subjects from Greek tragedy was routinely categorized as romantic classicism. Salvador Dali is among the most versatile and prolific artists of the 20 th century. Dali successfully turned to sculpture, printmaking, fashion, advertising, writing, and most famously, film making in his collaboration with Luis Buñuel and Alfred Hitchcock. He was notorious for his flamboyant personality and undeniable technical virtuosity. In Dali’s early years, his work bears the stamp of Spaniards Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró. His paintings displayed a fascination for Classical and Renaissance art, which was visible through his hyper-realistic style and religious symbolism of his later work (Dali).

The painting depicts a nude Endymion who was variously a handsome Aeolian (one of the four major tribes in which Greeks divided themselves) shepherd, hunter, or king who was said to rule and live at Olympia in Ellis. He had a supernaturally smooth body in the throes of sensual pleasure . This painting revolves around an ancient myth reference Endymion who was an “ideal” beauty. Endymion had a disagreement with the Goddess Juno, who then
punished him by putting him to sleep for 30 years. Additionally, Juno does not have him age so he is able to maintain his beauty during the 30 year sleep (“Girodet, the Sleep of Endymion”). Another myth was that, Overcome by his beauty, she came down to earth and made love to him in his dreams. Endymion experienced such pleasure that upon wakening he begged Zeus for perpetual youth, immortality and eternal sleep, so he could have the dream forever (Renema). This painting illustrates Endymion as he is visited by the chaste Goddess Diana, the Goddess of the hunt. Diana was so in love with him that she visited him every night. She took the form of a moonbeam (or as some would state, she’s associated with the moon), which is how she is personified here. She bathes him in light coming down from the moonlit sky.
