After a few weeks, she slowly began to f orget about her pet. “Rebecca, when wa s the last time you cleaned this fish tank?” her mother asked as she examined the algae filled fish tank. Rebecca gulped and lied by saying she had last week. Her mother quickly dropped the subject when she saw Rebecca going to clean it. The days after Rebecca decided to only feed the fish once but twice as much. The following week Rebecca’s mom went into her room and noticed the gold fish floating at the top of the water and upside down. She gasped and quickly grabbed the bowl. “You poor thing”, she said as she walked to the bathroom. That afternoon when Rebecca arrived from school her mother asked her when she was in her room if she noticed anything missing. Rebecca looked around her room then responded that she could not find anything different. Her mother showed her the empty fishbowl. “Where did mister fishy go? What did you do to him?” She demanded. Her mother quietly sat her down on her bed. She calmly explained to Rebecca that the gold fish had passed away and that she would no longer see him. Her mother gave her the small fish tank and told her

to get ready for dinner as she walked out. She quietly stared at the empty bowl thinking to herself how could it have happened. She placed the bowl on top of her dresser as she remembered how it looked when her gold fish was swimming around in it. When she arrived from school there it was waiting for her every day. Tears slid down her cheek as she realized she would never see it again. She went downstairs to her mother and told her she understood that she wasn’t ready for a pet.
