saying goodbye to their daughter Ismene. Estevan shows Taylor that not all men are bad. He changes her view on men and he is the first man she has ever loved. “All four of us had buried someone we loved in Oklahoma.” (220). This quote is said by Taylor. She says this in reference to Esperanza burying Ismene, Turtle burying her mother and doll, Estevan burying her, and herself burying Estevan. She loved Estevan because he showed her that men can be kind, caring, and loving. Throughout the book Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver, the idea of interdependence among characters was shown. This was shown through character relationships such as Taylor and Lou Ann, Edna Poppy and Virgie Parsons, and Taylor and Estevan. Kingsolver emphasized this point through nature such as the relationship between bean trees and rhizobia bacteria. People need each other as much as things in nature need each other. Interdependence
4of humans is important to life just as interdependence between bean trees and rhizobia is ideal to survival of the bean trees.
