they believed that they were not fully responsible for the war, and the reality that Germany retaliated in response to the treaty. One of the reasons why the treaty backfired is because Germany lost a considerable amount of energy production along with lost lives and property. Pampena 2 (“German Territorial Losses, Versailles Treaty, 1919”). Once the treaty was hammered out, the financial obligation that each citizen of Germany owed was higher than if lethal weaponry was not used. This only accelerated the effects of Germany’s irreversible debt that the Versailles Treaty ordered. Another contributing factor hidden in the fine print is the mandated dwindling of Germany’s armed forces, even though Germany was mortified by the overall provisions of the treaty. Following World War I, Hitler believed that the rehabilitation of nations can only be achieved using weaponry and mass casualties (Hitler, 1924). But under Article 160, Germany’s army size was capped at a mere one hundred thousand men (Treaty of Versailles, 1919).
