3 7 Theories of Consciousness z Supramodular Interaction Theory (SIT) Consciousness allows us to resolve conflicts z Integrated Information Theory (IIT) Consciousness allows us to integrate information 8 Supramodular Interaction Theory (SIT) Ezequiel Morsella z Consciousness serves the functional purpose of resolving conflicts between supramodular response systems The phenomenal state (consciousness) is a physical state that establishes a form of ‘cross-talk’ that permits otherwise encapsulated systems to influence skeletomotor action collectively and adaptively Example: z Holding breath underwater

4 10 Supramodular Interaction Theory (cont’d) z Primary function of consciousness is to integrate incompatible skeletomotor intentions. z People are most likely to be conscious of conflicts involving competition for control of the skeletal muscle system z Conscious conflicts stem from incompatible skeletomotor intentions such as when one suppresses a prepotent response 11 Efference-Efference Binding z Conscious states are not needed to inhale or withdraw one’s hand from a painful stimulus z But they are needed to modulate these actions 12 Information Integration Theory Giulio Tononi z Two theoretical pillars: Conscious states are highly differentiated; they are informationally rich.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
