Solution a) Route A: Extra kilometres = 426 – 379 = 47 km Extra cost = 47 × $0.44 = $20.68 Total cost before taxes = $329 + $20.68 = $349.68 Taxes = $349.68 × 0.13 = $45.4584 = $45.46 Total with taxes = $349.68 + $45.46 = $395.14 Route B: No extra kilometres (stayed below the 379 allowed) Taxes = $329 × 0.13 = $42.77 Total with taxes = $329 + $42.77 + $18.00 toll = $389.77 b) Route B is the better route for two reasons: • Audrey will save $5.37 ($395.14 – $389.77). • She will save time and a possible “traffic headache” by not using the busy Highway 401.
