Solution Per kilometre fee = 187 × $0.49 = $91.63 Total before taxes = $39.95 + $91.63 = $131.58 Taxes (PST and GST) = $131.58 × 0.13 = $17.1054 = $17.11 Total with taxes = $131.58 + $17.11 = $148.69 If the rental is for a longer, one-way move, the distance travelled will affect the cost estimate. The rental company may quote a fee for a number of kilometres, with an extra “per kilometre” fee if needed. Example 6 Audrey rents a 17 ft. truck for two days of use to move from Windsor to Toronto. The total fee of $329 allows for 379 km. There is also a charge of $0.44/km for each extra kilometre. a) Determine the total (with taxes) for each of the following routes: • Route A uses almost entirely Highway 401, and is a total of 426 km. • Route B uses Highway 407 ETR for part of the route (extra cost of tolls is $18). The total distance travelled is 371 km.

Solution a) Route A: Extra kilometres = 426 – 379 = 47 km Extra cost = 47 × $0.44 = $20.68 Total cost before taxes = $329 + $20.68 = $349.68 Taxes = $349.68 × 0.13 = $45.4584 = $45.46 Total with taxes = $349.68 + $45.46 = $395.14 Route B: No extra kilometres (stayed below the 379 allowed) Taxes = $329 × 0.13 = $42.77 Total with taxes = $329 + $42.77 + $18.00 toll = $389.77 b) Route B is the better route for two reasons: • Audrey will save $5.37 ($395.14 – $389.77). • She will save time and a possible “traffic headache” by not using the busy Highway 401.

Avtar rents a mid-sized car for three days at a cost of $42.95/day. He purchases the optional insurance at a cost of $15.95/day. This vehicle allows unlimited kilometres within Ontario. What is the total cost with taxes if the vehicle remains in Ontario? 13. Alison rents a 6 ft. × 12 ft. trailer for a move from Windsor to Toronto. This two-day rental allows for 350 km of travel at a cost of $185. What is the total cost, with taxes, if the total distance travelled was 398 km and extra kilometres cost $0.33 each?
