He is the one who witnessed the death of Lavender. However, the way he describes it, one would think that he does not care. But it is not as such. He is a person who, perhaps due to war, has lost his human emotion. Ajibose 3 that war has deprived him a sense of care and grief. That is sad, and the reader cannot help but sympathize with Kiowa. While this essay has only covered three of the soldiers found in “The Things They Carried,” virtually all the soldiers mentioned in the story deserve some form of sympathy. They all go through tough periods and are carrying luggage that they carry for the rest of their lives. Even when they retire, the internal luggage is always weighing them down. As a result, they deserve everyone’s empathy.
