So, for the next class, I frontloaded information about concentration and brought up situations that they have encountered concentration in their lives and then began the reading. The second group was able to retell in their own words the meaning of the text because I activated their schema. The Five Pillars of Reading Instruction model works from the top down. The structure is designed for one pillar to be completed and then move on to the next pillar. Whereas the Cognitive Foundations of Learning to Read model is depicted with two supporting legs, representing the two competencies, that hold up reading comprehension - the ultimate goal. The Cognitive Foundations of Learning to Read model is broken down into smaller categories allowing for more precise diagnosis to in the event of the breakdown of comprehension. The biggest take away that I would share with colleagues is the importance of developinglanguage skills early on in a child’s life. Being able to recognize letters, then to match a sound to those letters, and then to put those sounds together to form words is the foundation of reading.
