o Chimps & macaque have higher rates of females rating w/multiple males in given cycle where the sperm swims faster Testis vs body mass o Chimps have larger testicles than humans and gorillas allowing them to produce more sperm per ejaculate Male-Male competition and the evolution of sexual dimorphism Competition promotes the evolution of ornaments and weapons Not the only way sexual dimorphism happens Best way to win a fight is to NOT fight, be so powerful looking so you don’t need to risk loosing Winners of inter-sexual competition have higher reproductive success any trait or behavior that allows higher reproductive success should get passed on to the next generation and increase in frequency Winners of male-male competition Winners have more access to females: o they end up being more attractive o losers of competition are less likely to try mating attempts once they lost (block male access) Dominance bouts ultimate goal: win the fight w/o fighting fighting only occurs when there are equal chances of winning b/t the males ( equal dominance ) positive relationship is seen b/t dominance and reproductive success sexual dimorphism : there are 2 shapes/morphs in size it means males are bigger than females or vice versa monomorphic : 1 size/shape (same size) humans are in the middle of body size (we are not very different in body size compared to chimps & gorillas) sperm producing males usually have stronger upper body strength Testosterone & facial appearance one on the left has more testosterone (visible in his face)
