Nestlé is preserving natural capital by committing to being 100% deforestation-free within the next three years by using satellite monitoring technology and supporting smallholder farms. The company is also promoting sustainable consumption by providing guides to consumers on cutting food waste at home. They are also reducing food waste in their supply chain and reducing operational waste. Johnson & Johnson CSR Comparison Johnson & Johnson is uniquely positioned as the world’s largest healthcare company, therefore their sustainability efforts have the opportunity to affect the globe. The company uses
11 the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals framework to determine their sustainability approach in three fundamental areas: “better health for all”, “responsible business practices”, and “environmental health”. Better Health for All To advance “better health for all”, the company is working on the world’s toughest health challenges by combating HIV and TB, preventing and responding to pandemic threats, tackling antimicrobial resistance, transforming mental healthcare, and combating neglected tropical diseases. For example, they have donated 200 million doses of VERMOX chewable tablets annually to children in developing countries for the treatment of intestinal worms. They are also improving access, community health and innovation by enhancing access to healthcare, contributing to community health, and advancing better health innovations. For example, through JLABS, their life science incubator network for innovators, they have worked with over 600 companies to support entrepreneurs in creating transformative solutions (Johnson & Johnson, 2019). Responsible Business Practices In support of “responsible business practices”, Johnson & Johnson is committed to ethics and transparency and product quality, safety and reliability. They also empower their employees and are working towards a responsible supply base. The company offers employees the opportunity for time off to volunteer through their Secondment Program and Global Pro Bono initiative. Johnson & Johnson has improved their transparency in responsible supply by disclosing their timber and palm oil sourcing through the CDP Forests Program (Johnson & Johnson, 2019). They have also improved supplier diversity and inclusion via their Sustainable Procurement Program where they directed allocations to support women and minority-owned businesses as well as employing people with disabilities (Johnson & Johnson, 2019). Environmental Health In advancing “environmental health” the company has set climate goals, invested in green building and energy efficiency programs, and are working to reduce the impact of their plastic packaging.
