2. Interview with librarian, school teacher, school nurse or administrator ˃ Community’s Health issues Teacher M.W. states that the community health issue that she has witnessed the most is the prevalence of overweight children (M.W., personal communication, November 4th, 2017). Another issue she emphasizes is the importance of vaccinating children, especially if they are a part of the public school system (M.W., personal communication, November 4th, 2017). ˃ Community’s Safety issues In M.W.’s eyes, the community safety issues are drivers speeding on roadways and not staying off of their phones while they drive (M.W., personal communication, November 4th, 2017). M.W. states that when the drivers are not paying close attention to the roads, children and other pedestrians are at “high risk for injury” (M.W., personal communication, November 4th, 2017). ˃ Strengths of the Community M.W. is most proud of how educated this community is (M.W., personal communication, November 4th, 2017). Analysis of Windshield Survey Analyze and summarize your observations and the input from key informants. Write a 3 paragraph summary of community health (2) and safety (1) issues for this community and strengthens of the community. Remember to cite personal communication as appropriate : Between the Windshield survey and the input from key informants I 10
found very useful information about my community. From my observation, this community in question is a very safe and well- maintained community. Its members are culturally diverse and the services and resources within the community cater to this diversity. Overall, I would say that this is a very nice community to live in. It is close to various amenities and shopping centers, but more importantly, there are many hospitals, clinics and urgent cares that are available in case of emergency. The community health issues that were brought up by the informants were smoking and obesity, namely, childhood obesity. Smoking in this community is not overtly prevalent but the issue does exist. While driving, I observed a few advertisements speaking out against smoking and tobacco use. The smokers I observed were typically 20-40 year olds of both genders. In addition to smoking, obesity was another concern of the informants. Similar to smoking, obesity is not overtly prevalent, but it can be seen within the community. Obesity can be observed more in the Mission Viejo portion of this community as opposed to the Ladera Ranch section, which offers many health clubs and gyms.
