Unsure whether it exacerbates or reduces economic inequality Economic interdependence is related to more peaceful relations, but those left behind tend to be resentful Politics and Globalization Nation states are less able to control social and economic events within their territory Global/regional decision-making bodies (UN, EU, etc.) are rising in importance but…They are not yet fully democratic/accountable “CNN” effect pressures governments to intervene on human rights violations International non-state actors have gained power Cultural Globalization Increases exposure to foreign ideas and practices, but… Cultural exports are disproportionately from western countries, particularly the U.S. In some cases, has resulted in “commoditization” of cultures Some ethnic and religious groups feel culturally threatened by globalization Has resulted in a sharp increase in reactionary “nationalist” and “fanatical” groups Has “killed” some cultures Culture of Poverty Borrowing on the idea from Lewis, the economist Galbraith claimed that many former colonies are crippled by a culture of poverty the intergenerational transmission of poverty The Human Cost of Poverty Among 7.1 billion human beings (2013), there are aprox: 870 million are undernourished (world hunger, 2013), 1000 million have no access to basic medical care (Shah, 2011), 1100 million lack access to safe drinking water (global issues, 2013), 1500 million lack adequate shelter (shelter the world, 2013), 1600 million have no electricity (global issues, 2013), 2600 million lack basic sanitation (global issues, 2013), 775 million adults are illiterate (CIA, 2013), 168 million children (aged 5 to 14) do wage work outside their family, 85 million do hazardous work, 8.4 million of them in the “unconditionally worst” forms of child labor, “defined as slavery, trafficking, debt bondage and other forms of forced labor, forced recruitment of children for use in armed conflict, prostitution

and pornography, and illicit activities” (International Labor Organization, 2013) SECTION 2: RACE, PREJUDICE, DISCRIMINATION, AND RACISM The Invention of Race Based on a three category system developed in Europe in the 18th century: caucasians, mongoloids, and blacks. Race and racism have always been connected The truth is that there is very little fundamental genetic variety between humans and no way to tell where one category stops and another begins. Race is literally skin deep. There has not been enough time for much genetic variation. We do not have distinct “races” or “subspecies.” RACE IS SOCIALLY CONSTRUCTED Race has no “scientific” basis, e.g., DNA Biological variability exists, but doesn’t conform to our “race” categories; racial characteristics aren’t transmitted as complexes All humans are 99.9% identical!

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
