Joint Capsule – sleeve-like extension of the periosteum forming a complete casing around the ends of bones. Synovial Membrane – lines the inner surface of the joint capsule and secretes synovial fluid Articulate Cartilage – thin layer of hyaline cartilage covering the articular surfaces of bones Joint Cavity – space between the articulating surfaces of the two bones of the joint Menisci – fibrocartilage disks located between the articulating ends of bones in some diarthroses Ligaments – Connect the bones providing strength additional to that generated by the joint capsule Bursae – closed synovial membranes filled with fluid Synovial Joint Structures 10 Sunday, June 12, 2011

1. Uniaxial Joints permit movement in only one axis and in only one plane. Include the: a. Hinge Joints – permit only back-and- forth movements like a door hinge preventing alternate directionalities (elbow) b.
