Aggression problems best treated in early development when people are still malleable Psychopathy Most widely use instrument to measure psychopathy is Psychopathic Personality Inventory or PPI o Focuses on 2 distinguishable factors – fearless dominance (FD) and self- centered impulsivity (SCI) Fearless dominance – reflects social potency, stress immunity, and fearlessness Self-centered impulsivity – reflects egocentricity, exploitativeness, hostile rebelliousness Triarchic model – psychopathy encompasses 3 separable components

o These 3 components are seen as building blocks for differing conceptions of psychopathy (1) Disinhibition – tendency toward impulsiveness, weak behavioral restraint, hostility, mistrust (2) Meanness – deficient empathy, lack of affiliative capacity, contempt toward others (3) Boldness – dominance, social assurance, emotional resiliency, venturesomeness There are 2 types of existing theories about casual factors in psychopathy o (1) Theories that emphasize core deficits in emotional sensitivity or responsiveness o (2) Theories positing basic impairments in cognitive-attentional processing Boldness is correlated negatively w/ anxiousness, Disinhibition & Meanness correlated negatively w/ anxiety Can You Call a 9-Year Old a Psychopath? 9-year old Michael’s problems started around age 3 after his brother Allan was born o Therapist gave him diagnosis of firstborn syndrome – acting out since he resented his new sibling Around age 5, Michael could switch from full-blown anger to pure rationality or calculated charm o Dan Waschbusch presented one possible diagnosis – Michael might be a psychopath Callous unemotional children – children who exhibit distinctive lack of effort, remorse, or empathy o Michael was almost 2 SD outside normal range for callous unemotional
