1. Each upper extremity contains 30 bones: i. Humerus is located in the arm; articulates with the pectoral girdle in the glenoid cavity and articulates with both the radius and ulna of the forearm, medial and lateral epicondyles. ii. Ulna is located in the medial aspect of the forearm; olecranon. iii. Radius is located in the lateral aspect of the forearm; note interosseous membrane between radius and ulna iv. 8 carpal bones are located in the carpus (wrist); v. 5 metacarpal bones (palm), note base, shaft and head of carpals, metacarpophalangeal joint forms the knuckle vi. 14 phalanges are located in the fingers, note base, shaft and head (except thumb) C. Pelvic (Hip) Girdle 1. The pelvic girdle provides a strong and stable support for the vertebral column and viscera. 2. The pelvic girdle consists of two coxal bones (hipbones) that meet anteriorly at the pubic symphysis (fibrocartilaginous joint) and are joined posteriorly to the sacrum (sacroiliac joint). 3. Each coxal bone of a newborn consists of three bones which eventually fuse into one bone; these three bones are: ilium, ischium and pubis bones. Note ischial tuberosity on ischium.
