Task 1 D. RECOMMENDATION: Upgrading the AEnergy Wi-Fi from WPA to WPA2 will reduce AEnergy’s cyber-attack vulnerability. The encryption keys used by WPA2 use a much stronger encryption and the keys are stored on the server, enabling IT admins to disabled access remotely. This greatly reduces security risk from previous employees or lost or stolen devices trying to access the network with vulnerable encryption. When any device connects to the network, WPA2 protocol creates a virtual tunnel that allows the login credentials to be communicated to the network protocol. Valid credentials get network access, while invalid credentials are denied access. D1. JUSTIFICATION: The Wi-Fi upgrade would address the security risk within the AEnergy network environment by reducing the ability for hackers to achieve a data breach. WPA encryption is easy for skilled hackers to crack. WPA2 encryption uses dynamic encryption keys and this can assist with preventing lost or stolen company devices using old encryption keys to access the network. Although it is best if AEnergy locks down USB drives within their network, having WPA2 encryption keys can provide a necessary security until that happens. The WPA2 server software is free and the current IT staff have all the skills and experience needed to install, configure, and deploy such software. Costs for upgrading the Wi-Fi are limited to the IT support man-hours needed for installing and configuring the server software. Any devices using WPA encryption can simply be configured to use WPA2 with no additional costs required. WPA2 used in enterprise mode is the safest and most dynamic Wi-Fi protocol available on the market. This upgrade will ensure the wireless network is as safe as can be from cyber-attacks and provides the ability to scale up without issue as the company expands to the two new locations. 11
