A second driving force is the pursuit of profit. As a business, it is Maryann’s objective to make a profit. She has set an objective of increasing her profit by 10 per cent per annum for the next two years. This desire to increase profit will prompt Maryann to introduce the new system as quickly as possible. A third driving force is technological development. Touch-screen technology and automated cash-handling devices are relatively new and a growing area. The current system does not allow customers to submit their own orders and make their own payments. The advancements in EFTPOS being linked to ordering systems now allow orders and payments to happen without an employee being present. This system will also allow the business to gain a competitive advantage over their competitors. However, Maryann might encounter some restraining forces in her push to introduce the changes. First, her employees may be reluctant to embrace the change as it will mean that some of them will be made redundant, as their positions will no longer exist. The remaining employees may resist performing the new procedures successfully as a way of expressing resentment on behalf of their workmates who were made redudant. This means they would not be actively engage in making the change a success. Another restraining force could be time. It will take time to install the new touch screens, as well as the new printers. It would not be possible for McDudley’s to operate during this time, hence resulting in a loss of revenue. It will also take time for the employees to become trained and proficient in using the new system. A third restraining force would be finances. It will be costly for Maryann to purchase and install the new technology. Plus, there will be a loss of sales during the installation and training periods. It will also be costly to pay the staff while they are training on the new equipment and it will take some time for them to become proficient users. Note : Other suitable driving forces are competitors, reduction of costs, innovation and societal attitudes. Other suitable restraining forces are organisational inertia and perhaps managers.

Marking guide: 1 mark for explaining each of the driving forces 1 mark for explaining each of the restraining forces h. Choose two of the restraining forces identified identified in your answer to part g . and propose strategies that Maryann could use to overcome them. 4 marks Sample answer: For the restraining force of McDudley’s employees, Maryann could undertake activities to boost morale and team spirit. Examples of appropriate activities include having a staff party or small celebrations in recognition of progress in learning the new system. She could also have group training days when the restaurant is closed and allow the employees to make their own orders and burgers. This would help to make the employees connected and enthusiastic about the changes and feel a part of what is going on.
