: (Fig 4.14c) o Bone - (Fig 4.15) – little ground substance; matrix calcium salts/collagen, hard yet a bit flexible, vascular Osteocytes- cells that monitor/maintain matrix, Lacunae- spaces where the osteocytes (or chondrocytes) sit Canaliculi- channels that connect the osteocytes Peri osteum - membrane that surrounds bone, contains osteoprogenitor cells Membranes - composed of epithelium with underlying connective tissue o Types Mucous membrane (Fig 4.16a)- lines passageways and chambers that communicate with exterior environment, must remain moist (i.e. goblet cells) Serous membrane (Fig 4.16b)- lines sealed, internal regions of the ventral body cavity; not open to the exterior Cutaneous membrane - skin (Fig 4.16c), thick, waterproof, dry Synovial membrane (Fig 4.16d)- produces fluid, fills and lubricates synovial joints (i.e. knee, shoulder, hip).
