"Edward Dmytryk Security Matter - C (Bufile 100-335472)." SAC Los Angeles to FBI Director. March 10, 1951. This letter explained how Edward Dmytryk gave the Los Angeles Special Agent in Charge information regarding his involvement in the Communist Party. English, Richard. "What Makes a Hollywood Communist?" The Saturday Evening Post . This newspaper article shows some of the media’s beliefs about what was going on with Edward Dmytryk and the blacklisting in general. It also explains about how Dmytryk gave information about the Communist Party to the FBI. McCarthy-Welch Exchange. House Un-American Activities Committee Cong. (1954) (testimony of Joseph Welch). The testimony of Welch shows what later testimonies were like, and also showed another stand that was taken later, by a different person. With this testimony I realized how wrong and against people's rights the questions that were being asked were. Trumbo, Dalton. Johnny Got His Gun . J. B. Lippincott, 1939. Trumbo’s book, Johnny Got His Gun , follows a soldier, Joe Benham, who has been injured, and is now reliving the things that he went through in his hospital bed. This book gave some perspective on why the HUAC could become suspicious of Trumbo being a Communist, because he really did have some stronger opinions in his writing. I also had a shortened version of a quote which I included in my paper, here is the rest of it: “Were they fighting for the liberty of eating free ice cream cones all their lives or for the liberty of robbing anybody they pleased whenever they wanted to or what? You tell a man he can't rob and you take away some of his liberty. You've got to. What the hell does liberty mean anyhow? It's a word like house or table or any other word. Only it's a special
12 kind of word. A guy says house and he can point to a house to prove it. But a guy says come on let's fight for liberty and he can't show you liberty. He can't prove the thing he's talking about so how in the hell can he be telling you to fight for it? No sir anybody who went out and got into the front line trenches to fight for liberty was a goddamn fool and the guy who got him there was a liar.” U.S. Congress. House. Committee on Un-American Activities. Hearings regarding the Communist Infiltration of the Motion Picture Industry: Hearings before the Committee on Un-American Activities, House of Representatives, Eightieth Congress, First Session . By J. Parnell Thomas. 1st sess. H. Washington, D.C.: U.S. G.P.O., 1947. 1-549. This collection of testimonies from Dmytryk, Trumbo, and many more showed how it was to stand against the HUAC and the way that the HUAC reacted to the men taking a stand against them.
