Bernstein’s early work thus led researchers to focus on interaction between teacher and students in the classroom. However, teachers are themselves acquirers of particular forms of what Bernstein calls ‘official pedagogic discourse’, theories of learning and pedagogy usually recontextualised in training courses, government policies, syllabus documents and then embedded in the craft knowledge teachers pass on to one another through their talk and practice.
