The purpose of discriminant analysis is to estimate the relationship between a single categorical dependent variable and a set of quantitative independent variables. Discriminant analysis plays the same role as the multiple linear regressions by predicting an outcome, and it has widespread applications in situations where the primary objective is identifying the group to which a categorical object belongs.
