Other ways to protect your computer Back up files regularly o Save to CD/DVD, USB drive, or other external source o Use web-based backup service Read website privacy statements o Understand what you’re getting before you agree to download or share personal information Close pop-ups using red X o ALWAYS use red X in the corner of pop-up screen. To be safe, use ATL + F4. o NEVER click yes, accept, or even cancel, because it could be a trick that installs software on computer Think before you click! o Be cautious with email attachments and links o Only download files from websites you trust o Your personal info Practice internet behavior that lowers risk Delete spam, don’t open it Be on lookout for online scams Use strong passwords o At least 8 characters o Mix of cases, letters, numbers and symbols

o No ‘real’ words, and no part of name Manage personal info carefully Do not share personal info in email or instant messages Use only secure and trusted websites Make sure you are where you think you are; websites can be faked Avoid financial transactions over wireless networks When in public, stay private Use technology to reduce nuisances and raise the alarm when appropriate Anti-phishing and anti-spam technology If identity is stolen: o Report it o Follow up in writing Make sure you get a writing back from the security o Change ALL passwords o Place fraud alert on credit reports
