Excess admin. Sodium bicarbonate Ingestion of bicarbonate producing salts Excessive acid loss – vomiting, diuretic use Compensation: Hypoventilation – increase CO2 retention Respiratory Alkalosis Causes: Hyperventilation Drugs (salicylates) ↑ temperature Fever Hysteria Pulmonary embolism Pulmonary fibrosis Compensation: Excretion of HCO3- by kidneys; reclaim H+ 6. Explain preanalytic problems and precautions in blood gas analysis. Preanalytical Error Collection/Personnel Sample Type (collect in haprinized syringe, roll them to mix so coagulation mixes) Sources of Error: anticoagulant, transport times, exposure to R.A., storage (put on ice to preserve system)(don’t expose to air – cap it) Patient Ventilation Status Transport Time (transport time importance b/c of volatile substances, analyze w/in 15 min) (prior to analyzing – no air bubbles in synrige before putting on analyzer; push a little out to make sure there are no clots) 7. List reference ranges for the following tests: pH, pCO2, pO2, HCO3-, O2 Saturation. pH: 7.35-7.45 pCO 2 (mm Hg): 35-45

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
