but it also include the business function of the firm as well. The ideal CIM system applies computer technology to all of the operational functions and information processing functions in manufacturing from order receive, through design and production, to product shipment. The CIM concept is that all of the firm’s operations related to the production function are incorporated in an integrated computer system to assist, augment, and / or automate the operations. The components of the integrated computer system, and their relationship to our model of manufacturing, are illustrated in figure. Customer orders are initially entered by the company’s sales force into a computerized order-entry system. The orders contain the specification describing the product. The specification serves as the input to the product design department. New products are designed on a CAD system. The components that comprise the product are designed. The output of the design department serves as the input to manufacturing engineering, where process planning, tool design and similar activities are accomplished to prepare for production. Many of these manufacturing engineering activities are supported by the CIM computer system. Process planning is performed using computer-aided process planning, and the tool design is done on a CAD system. The output from manufacturing engineering provides the input to production planning and control, where material requirements planning and scheduling is performing using the computer system and so it goes, through each step in the manufacturing cycle. Full implementation of CIM results in the automation of the information flow through every aspect of the company’s organization. 6. Explain the Computer Aided Process Planning. (10 marks) Computer Aided Process Planning Computer aided process planning represents the link between design and manufacturing in a CAD/CAM system. Process planning is connected with data mining the sequence of processing and assembly steps that must be accomplished to make the products. The processing sequence is documented on a form called a route sheet. The route sheet lists the production operations, marching cells or work stations where each operation is performed, fixtures and tooling required and the standard time for each task. Computer aided process planning systems are designed round two approaches. These approaches are called: 1. Retrieval CAPP systems. 2. Generative CAPP systems. 7. What are the benefits of Computer Aided Process Planning ? (10 marks) Benefits of CAPP Among the benefits derived from computer automated process planning are the following: 1. Increased productivity of process planners.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
