habitat because of their camouflage abilities. ▪ How would these results change if the colors or patterns of the habitat were to change? If the habitat were to change, the colored prey would not have the same camouflage ability and the amount of prey would change drastically. ▪ Identify at least two things that are unrealistic and two things that are realistic about this exercise. Natural selection can sometimes be very unrealistic in a natural habitat because some prey are easier to find than others. Also, in a natural habitat each surviving prey would not have offspring changing the pattern in this exercise. The model of the different colored pray was a good example of the camouflage many animals can portray. Also, the fact that we had to pick up the prey randomly as fast as we can was a good example of natural selection. ▪ What traits could help a predator be more “fit” in this model environment? The prey could have been smaller, which would have made it harder to pick up and help it “survive”. ▪ Describe other adaptations besides color that could affect an individual’s survival. Size, ability to defend, ability to hide, and how fast the prey is can affect the preys survival. [ Close this window ]
