Negative roles in communication can be very beneficial to groups but also can cause the group to fail to meet the goal. Negative behaviors can be introduced to the group in different degrees of intensity frequency. With this, their effects can range from just a nuisance to causing the group to fail to meet the goal or task at hand. There are two subgroups of negative roles called self-centered and unproductive roles. In the clip, Penny played a negative role. While she was concerned about Sheldon’s situation, she made the situation revolve around her and expected the group to treat the situation the same way. Penny is a mixture of a central negative and a self-confessor. In regard to central negative, she makes other suggestions that are not necessarily are not going to help the situation and might actually make them worse. In regard to self-confessor, she makes the group issue into her problem. Yes, she is almost directly involved, but the problem is not about her at the moment. It is about Leonard and Alex.
