Along with that were four who died in jail and even two dogs that were shot and killed for suspicions of practicing witchcraft. From the evidence given, some might say that the church was a big influence in the Salem Witch Trials. I however find this to be true yet untrue at the same time. The Salem Witch Trials were very much affected by, not the church, but the beliefs that the people believed and the church taught. People were looking for something that could explain these very odd situations that were happening around them and their answer was the devil. The church explained that the devil was the one that caused evil and the ones who followed him were witches. As for this, people believed the explanation to the bad things occurring to the people around them was the cause of witches doing the work of the devil. As the years after went by, many of the colonists felt ashamed of what they had done to the people during the Salem Witch Trials. When the trials finally ended the colony experienced many misfortunes like droughts, crop failures, smallpox outbreaks and Native-American attacks. Many of the people began to wonder if the God they believed in was punishing them for their horrible acts towards all the innocent people they hurt. The Governor soon after made a proclamation in hopes to make things right with God and made a day dedicated to the humiliation that the people brought upon themselves. Not only this, a couple years later, Ann Putnam, one of the first girls to say the witches possessed her, made a public apology. A few years later, Massachusetts still tried to redeem themselves by passing a bill to clear the names of those who were convicted and even gave money to restore the family’s names. A couple hundred years later, in 1957, Massachusetts still felt guilty about what was done and officially apologized for the trials and finished clearing the few names that remained.
