All of these items require engineering. All of them require testing and routine maintenance. However, the main thing that sets them apart is the ³exibility for software to evolve more regularly. This is likely the reason why it took Microsoft 55 person years to develop their word processor and delivered it 4 years late. The similarities between the three items is pretty straightforward, as they all require planning, design, and their eventual construction. When looking at the aircraft and bridge, there are certain fundamentals in engineering that require them to work in the real world. This is also true in the case of developing a word processor, as there are constraints on the computer language used and the computer system itself. All three items require testing and maintenance to ensure they function properly under the conditions they were designed for. Maintenance of the physical items is obviously much more rigid, as they must maintain their overall form and can only be maintained with replacement parts. This is where it becomes very apparent how
