In 1950 a number of European countries initiated the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) at a conference in Devon, United Kingdom. The exact number of countries participating in the union was 23. Around four years later after the foundation of the EBU the Narcissus Festival was held in Montreux. The broadcast of this particular festival is considered to be a milestone in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest since the European Broadcasting Union decided to launch an international song contest in 1954. The Italian Festival di Sanremo influenced the newly established contest.
