good idea to wash it out with water and to tell someone to make sure that it is completely and properly treated and so that it can be recorded. This helped me to understand what managing these animals as a small animal veterinarian might be like and helped to build my liking of small animals and what taking care of them can be like. I was in animal science classes in high school for three years. A part of the class was taking care of the husbandry of the fish, guinea pigs, ferrets, hamsters, snake, chinchilla, rabbit, lizard, and even the sugar gliders we had at some point in the class. In the veterinary assistance class, there we at one point during the class period went to a
small animal clinic in walking distance of the school and toured around there. Taking careof the different variety of small animals in high school allowed me to understand more about what the husbandry aspect of small animals that are not dogs and cats is like. This is something that veterinarians with these types of small animals might have to do or oversee because it is just as important as the treatment of these animals for veterinarians because a clean and safe environment is good for these animals’ health. It also gave me a glimpse into the part of being a small animal veterinarian that is not just dogs and cats. The tour of the small animal clinic allowed me to see what a clinic looks like and to understand a little bit better about how they manage their animals and what type of environment I might be working in. It helped me to understand a little bit better that I liked the environment of the clinic and it is somewhere I would like to work because I felt comfortable there and felt like it was an environment I would like working in someday. Also, I liked hearing one of the veterinarians that work there talk about what working there would be like, because it helped me to understand what working in a veterinary clinic is like and helped support me wanting to be a small animal veterinarian. I have had a good look into the small animal world by volunteering at the Orange County Animal Shelter, taking care of high school small animals, and touring a small animal veterinary clinic. In the future to get more of the veterinary and the health part of the small animal world, I am planning to try to get veterinary experience. I am hoping to do this by shadowing a veterinarian in a small animal clinic, working in a small animal clinic, doing one of the small animal internships on Vet Pac such as the Feline Health internship, etc. This will help me to get a clear understanding of the small animal veterinary profession and to hopefully determine and enforce that my career goal is to be a small animal veterinarian and to enforce my love for small animals and their wellbeing.
