population has waned some in recent years as the Pentecostal influence grows (Gooren, 2014, p. 194-195). Religious holidays are also very important to the Chilean culture which makes sense as the bulk of the citizens in Chile affiliate with the Roman Catholic Church. These holidays are celebrated by most Chileans with family and close friends further establishing a patriarchal family unit. Ethics Chile is known throughout the world to have solid ethics, especially business ethics. Much of the corruption in the Republic of Chile disappeared when the country completed its transition from a military dictatorship to a democracy in 1990 (Central Intelligence Agency, 201, p. 6). The high standard of ethics in Chile is often associated with the heavy influence of Christians in the country. Approximately 88% of the country is Christian. Another theory

GLOBAL BUSINESS CULTURAL ANALYSIS: CHILE 8 suggests that the geographic isolation of Chile from most of the world helps to maintain a strong since of nationality and pride in country that lends themselves towards being more ethical than most countries. In a 2005 study conducted by the Management & Excellence (M&E), Madrid, an ethics rating firm, Management & Excellence rated Chile as the highest ethical Latin American country by a large margin (Management & Excellence, 2005, p. 1). The study showed Chile received a rating of 74% while the closest Latin American country to them only scored a 60% (Mexico). According to M&E, “Chile is Latin America’s most ethical and sustainable country for business” (2005, p. 1). Values and Attitudes In Chile, one of the most important aspects of life is the family. Many of the values and attitudes revolve around the family which is still mostly patriarchal. In Chile the family comes first. Working overtime in Chile is seldom heard of as it infringes on family time. There are very few businesses that are open on weekends as they try to respect the role that a strong family core has in its culture (Reach to Teach, n.d., p. 2). Much of the Chilean business economy is considered to be formal, especially when compared to other South American countries. Chileans do pride themselves in being punctual but will consider being on time as early so do not arrive for any scheduled meeting or dinner less than twenty minutes late. The citizens in Chile do not like to be rushed or feel that they are being pressured so business will be conducted on a much slower pace than that of North America or Europe (2016, p. 1-2). In Chile the gender roles are more rigid than in many other countries. Men still take on the primary role as the family patriarch and provider but women have slowly begun moving

GLOBAL BUSINESS CULTURAL ANALYSIS: CHILE 9 more into the work force in recent years. “Women now make up 30% of the labor. In addition, many women hold important political and business positions” (2016, p. 5). In fact, in January 2006 Chile elected Michelle Bachelet as its first female president and created the first cabinet in
