means of production, flexible business structures, mass customization knowledge economy - education required for jobs, lots of knowledge/ portfolio workers, contingent workforce hardship funnel - gateway insecurities basic needs hardships stealing leagal trouble ex- someone with no health insurance gets sick, cant pay bills, cant buy food, steals food, goes to jail portfolio worker - workers with a large amount of different skills, education, etc contingent workforce - a temporary/ low skill workforce postmodern - quality of a technologically sophisticated society that is preoccupied with consumer goods and media images manufactured risk - dangers that are created by the impact of human knowledge and technology on the natural world. Ex- global warming, and genetically modified foods external risk - dangers from natural world that are unrelated to human actions ex- drought, earthquake identity - the distinctive characteristics of a person’s or group’s character that relate to who they are and what is meaningful to them. Some of the main sources of identity include gender, sexual orientation, nationalist or ethnicity, and social class social aging - the norms, values and roles that are culturally associated with a particular chronological age disengagement theory - a functionalist theory of aging which holds that it is functional for society to remove people from their traditional roles when they become elderly, thereby freeing up those roles for others.
